Making policy more public

Delivering services to more than a billion citizens

Case Study - Unique Identification (UID)/Aadhar.

Aim: To furnish each Indian citizen with a unique 16 digit ID number that allow
access to services across platforms.

Technology: The platform is an open Application Programming Interface (API)
that allows entrepreneurs to build software applications around it.

Impact: Using UID cards the Government will be able to authenticate citizens and
deliver services online, and via mobile phones.

Lessons Learnt : The success of the UID shows that countries with large populations can
indeed get high-quality data in a cost-effective, inclusive way using multiple biometrics.
